Clay Play (6 Sessions Course)

A Course Overview

Join award winning experimental designers and makers Joe Hartley & Tom Philipson as they guide you through a series of simple and adaptable techniques to make a range of visually stunning pottery products using just a piece of wire and a screw to cut clay.

Developed in collaboration with artists Abi Holsborough & Zoë Zo, this six-session course is for everyone, whether you regularly work with clay or haven't touched any since you were at school.

About this Course
This course is part of the initial public programme for The Farmer's Arms. Under the name, A Public House, this new series of collaborative design courses will open up the making process and encourage dialogue through the design development process between designers, artists and communities to produce a new range of useful, collaboratively designed products that will be sold at, and used in The Farmer's Arms.

This course is subsidised by the support of the 2020 Whitegold International Ceramic prize for which Grizedale Arts was one of the award recipients.

Some useful information

What You'll Need to Participate:

Free for anyone to access, you can learn at your own pace, pausing and re-watching each video as many times as you need to. To participate in the course, all you will need is some clay and a wire cutting kit. You can purchase a ready-made wire cutting kit from the Grizedale Arts Shop, or make your own following Tom and Joe's instructions in Session One.

Sourcing Your Clay:

For those who haven’t purchased clay before and are not sure what to buy, you can easily find a supplier using your preferred internet search engine to look up ‘buff clay suppliers’. If you purchase a 12.5kg bag to get you started, which will be more than plenty to last you through to the end of the course.

Where to Find a Kiln:

If you don’t have a kiln, and have no idea where to access one, we can help you find a local resource through our networks. All you need to do is ask!
