NOVEMBER



Every Wednesday, 10.00am - 4.30pm:
Get Involved with Volunteer Wednesdays


To date we’ve had 50+ incredible people join our volunteer days. There's still a lot of work to do, so if you are up for a challenge with friendly locals and staff, join us. We'll reward you with a big lunch as well as tea, coffee, cake and conversation.


Every Wednesday at 1.00pm sharp
Crake Valley Wednesday Community Lunch
£5 per person, no booking neccessary
(Or free to volunteers!)

Join our staff and volunteers for a delicious and affordable 2-course midweek lunch.
This initiative is part of our regular Volunteer Wednesdays (10.00-16.00) which anyone can join in with to help refurbish our inn. We’re a friendly, hard-working bunch!

Sorry, but we’re unable to cater for special dietary needs at these communal lunches.



Friday 5th, 5.00pm - Late:
Guy Fawkes Night

Celebrating Guy Fawkes night, we’ll be firing up our outdoor oven for baked potatoes with very special toppings, Crake Valley hotdogs, homemade parkin and other treats.

There’ll be sparklers, family activities and a fire big enough to keep you warm.



Saturday 13th - POSTPONED - New date coming soon:
A Walk in the Woods with Tom Philipson


Join our Workshop Manager, Tom Philipson for an autumnal wander through a local woodland where he will identify native trees, discuss their folklore and characteristics as timber for the craftsperson and maker, and help you collect materials for later projects. Back at The Farmer's Arms Workshops, Tom will guide you to make a simple wooden object for the home to take away with you.


Saturday 20th, 10.00am - 5.00pm:
The Farmer’s Winter Fair


Building on the success of our Farmer's Fete this summer, we're hosting a Winter Fair to celebrate everything thats special about the Crake Valley - the people, the produce, the local independent businesses. There’ll be stalls showcasing local food and drink, fresh produce, baked goods and preserves, crafts, bric-a-brac and everything in-between.

The Farmer's Workshops will host drop-in making sessions for you to create personalised gifts and The Stable Bar will be serving a special warming winter menu until late.



Saturday 20th, 6.00pm - Late:
The Farmer’s Charity Auction & Instagram Auction


Bid up! After The Farmer’s Winter Fair, we’ll be hosting our first live auction at the inn, plus an online Instagram auction for friends in faraway places. All for the good cause of refurbishing the inn in the coming months.

Expect minor beauties, pictures we can't find space for, surplus ceramics and experiences money cannot (usually) buy.



Thursday 25th, 7.30pm - Late:
The Stable Bar Music Programme Presents Celtic Fiddles

For the first event in our new Stable Bar Thursday Night Programme, we host Celtic Fiddles in the historic Stable Bar.

Join us for food, drinks and to soak up the atmosphere as this experienced group of musicians play a live set drawn from their various forays, participation in Scottish workshops and sessions in the Highlands and Islands.



Saturday 27th, 10am - 12.30pm, 1.30pm - 4pm OR 5.30pm - 8pm:
Make Your Own Christmas Wreath

Let your neighbourhood know you’re in the festive spirit with your very own hand-made Christmas wreath.

Join local gardener and craft tutor Sally Whittaker Benson as she teaches you how to build your own natural, fully biodegradable Christmas wreath from start to finish.


OCTOBER




Starting Saturday Sat. 2nd October, 10am - 4pm: The Farmer’s Arms Pottery School

This four part, once-a-month pottery school is hosted on the first Saturday of each month (October to January) between 10am and 4pm in The Farmer’s Arms pottery.

Taught by Grizedale Arts Director, Adam Sutherland, it provides students with a comprehensive introduction to ceramics covering all the basics from clay to kiln.

Ethical & Sustainable Farm Diversification with
John Atkinson & Maria Benjamin


Local farmers John Atkinson and Maria Benjamin share their Dodgson Wood diversification journey (from wool to holidays to meat to soap) on Crake Valley home turf.

Tuesday 7th, 12.30 - 2.30pm: Join The Crochet Corner

Would you like to learn to crochet or improve your current skills?

Even if you are a complete beginner, The Crochet Corner is for you. Run by Judith (Joey) Hannah, this relaxed independent crochet group is a space to learn from an experienced teacher, meet fellow crocheters, exchange tips and tricks and get inspiration for your next project.  



Friday 10th 5pm - 10pm, Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th 12 - 10pm: The Stable Bar Offically Opens

Join us in The Stable Bar as we host a soft launch of this newly refurbished, much-loved, historic bar. Book to dine from our changing seasonal menu or stop by for a relaxed drink (or two) from local breweries and independent producers.

On Saturday, get involved with some of the special activities taking place around the site and across The Valley as we celebrate the Crake and everything that makes it a special.




Saturday 11th, 9.00am - 5.00pm: A Crake Valley Celebration Day

To celebrate everything that’s great about the Crake, we’ll be hosting some special activities to encourage everyone to share what makes the Crake a special place to live, work and visit for you.


Local photographer Lindsay Ward will host a Smartphone Photography course teaching you how to take better photographs on your phone and how you can contribute images to our Crake Valley mapping project (see below).

In the Stable Bar, local artist and map maker Kate Lloyd-Philipps will invite you to contribute your nominations to an alternative Crake Valley map. An interative drop in session open to locals and visitors of all ages.  

Down at Dodgson Wood, The Farmer’s Arms Teaching Garden will be open for visitors and our sister site Lawson Park will also be welcoming pre-booked visits.



Saturday 11th, 10.00am - 4.00pm: Crake Valley Smartphone Photography Course with Lindsay Ward

Are you keen to improve your photography skills but don’t want to buy expensive cameras or lots of bulky equipment? This course is for you!

Join local photographer Lindsay Ward, as she teaches you how to make the most of your smartphone camera.



The Valley Talks - Architect Cany Ash Demystifies Sustainable Architecture
Saturday 25th September, 5.00pm - 6.15pm

Architect Cany Ash shares her experience designing sustainable homes with low tech building materials to create better architecture.

Part of Grizedale Arts Black Shed programme, this talk is a must for everyone interested in green building and sustainable development

The Valley Apple Days - Bring Your Apple Harvest for Juicing


Do you have an orchard which needs harvesting or a neglected apple tree in your garden which needs picking?

Not sure what to do with your harvest?

Grizedale Arts Associate Artist Philip Speakman invites young people across the South Lakes to bring their creative and destructive energies to a 4 day hands-on filmmaking school at The Farmer’s Arms.

Join local oak swill and rush basket makers, Owen Jones and Jane Bradley and make your own bespoke rush hat under their expert tuiton.

The perfect accessory for warm summer months, you’ll use English rush harvested from the river by Owen.






Saturday 14th, 10am - 4.30pm: All About Slipware with Vicky & Michael Eden, Joe Hartley and Tom Philipson

Join potters, Vicky & Michael Eden alongside makers Joe Hartley and Tom Philipson for this one-day introductory slipware course in The Farmer’s Arms pottery.

Join experienced stone waller Peter Drake for this two day course teaching traditional dry stone wall construction using only a few hand tools and no cement or mortar.

Chaired by Jo Andrews, presenter of the popular podcast Haptic and Hue’s Tales of Textiles, this panel discussion will tell the stories of four very different businesses doing well from wool




Wednesday 14th, 2pm - 4pm: Ask a Gardener with Karen Guthrie and Bethan Pettitt (Live Online Q&A Session)

This frank and friendly session is aimed at gardeners of any level of experience, local or not


Saturday 24th, 10am - 4pm: Learn Illuminated Lettering with Sarah Lace

Join Lake District based illuminator, Sarah Lace, for this one day hands-on course in the historic craft of illuminated lettering.

As part of our Volunteer Wednesday programme, we are opening up our delicious lunch offer to the rest of the community and passing visitors. Our community lunches are a great chance to hear more about the project and enjoy lively conversation with friendly locals and staff.

There is no need to book, just come along for 1.00pm.  



Thursday 2 December, 10.30am - 5.00pm, Feast at 6.30pm:
Feasting with Ash Trees: A Workshop with Charlie Whinney

Join local maker Charlie Whinney for this day-long course as he teaches you the basics of hand-carving, machining and steam-bending using locally sourced ash. You'll make your own bowl, pudding mould and an array of other decorative items that will later form the setting for a simple group supper to close the workshop.

The Stable Bar Music Programme Presents Living Room Dance Club

Part of our ongoing Thursday night live music programme, we host a DJ set played entirely on 45-inch records from Manchester based Ailsa Mclaggan’s Living Room Dance Club, in our historic Stable Bar.

The first time Ailsa will be playing in Cumbria, not only will the music but jumping, but you can also bring along your own 45-inch record nominations for inclusion in our vintage 1980s juke box.
