About this Workshop

This once-a-month pottery school launching on the 5 June 2021 will be the first course hosted in The Farmer’s Arms new workshop spaces.

Taught by Grizedale Arts Director, Adam Sutherland, this four-part course will provide students with a comprehensive introduction to ceramics covering all the basics from clay to kiln. Over each session, hosted on the first Saturday of each month, students will be guided through a range of techniques including building, finishing, decorating and firing.

Session 1: Clay, 5 June 10am – 4pm

In this introductory class, students will learn a variety of processes from hand building to throwing on a potter’s wheel. Each student will receive one-on-one tuition on the potter’s wheel over the course of the day.

Session 2: Clay (the sequel), 3 July 10am – 4pm

A continuation of session 1, this class is dedicated to the finishing of ceramic items and other processes of making.

Session 3: Decoration, 7 August 10am – 4pm

Students learn the fundamentals of decoration through a number of slip processes and techniques, including inlay, resist, trailing and more.

Session 4: Glazing and Firing, 11 September 10am – 4pm

In the final session, students experiment with all manner of glazes, working with majolica, oxides and enamels to produce fantastic effects in the kiln.

You will learn in a small group of up to 8 students to allow plenty of chances to ask questions. Each session runs from 10am - 4pm with tea, coffee and cake provided for the morning and afternoon breaks. Please bring your own lunch.
