Join Author and Academic, Dr Charlie Gere at The Farmer’s Arms for this unconventional look at The Lake District.

Beyond the picture postcard scenes of mountains, Herdwicks and quaint cottages, there’s a side to this remote corner of England which is seldom seen. Gere’s book ‘I hate the Lake District’ delves deep into subjects such as Nuclear power, slavery, Coniston Water deaths and UFO sightings… all in a county typically recognised for it’s cute sheep.

Each chapter begins with an account of a visit to the place and then wanders off into relevant themes and subjects, all challenging the bourgeois nature writing typical in this landscape.

In this one-off verbal joust in The Farmer’s Arms Lecture Theatre (AKA, The Dining Room), Gere goes head to head with Grizedale Arts’ ‘I Love The Lake District’ discussing the Lakes and it’s ‘special conditions’ with Adam Sutherland (Director, Grizedale Arts).

Copies of ‘I Hate The Lake District’ with a limited edition cover by artist Bedwyr Williams will be on sale in The Farmer’s Arms Honest Shop during the evening.

The bar will also be open with a full range of Lake District micro brewery beers alongside Ruskin Soup, Bowder Stone sausage rolls and Kendal Mint Cake.
