Bring in your old rusty tools and leave with them shiny and sharp at our monthly tool restoration workshop with Tom Philipson.

Is your scythe, sickle or secateurs as blunt as a butter knife? Does using your wood planer feel more like using a cheese grater? This workshop will give your rusty old tools a new lease of life and equip you with the knowledge and skills to sharpen and restore tools at home.

Over the day, you’ll learn practical and theoretical aspects of different sharpening techniques, the best method for the tool you need to restore and how to maintain it to prolong its life.

If our workshops take your fancy, but you’re not local to The Farmer’s Arms, we have accommodation so you can make a weekend out of your visit. The Farmer’s Barn is our self-catering hostel perfect for solo travellers and The Farmer’s Loft is our spacious six person apartment situated above the workshop.

About the tutor:

Tom Philipson at The Farmer's Arms Workshop

Training as a cabinet maker at 16 years old, Tom went on to study furniture conservation and restoration and has worked in the industry for over 30 years. Drawing on his experience, he moved into furniture and product design, working with Grizedale Arts to create bamboo implements, multi-purpose furniture, display systems, garden gates and table ware for The Farmer’s Arms, Lawson Park and GA’s many local, national and international projects. Now the workshop manager at The Farmer’s Arms, Tom has developed The Farmer’s Arms’ mould-based pottery techniques and designed and built much of the inn’s furniture.
