Join award winning designer and maker Tom Philipson in this rewarding and fascinating six-week  evening class.

Each student will receive their own late victorian Hepplewhite dining chair which they will carefully restore to take home at the end of the course. Over 6 weeks you will learn woodwork and restoration skills to reinvigorate your chair so it can be used for another 100 years!

This course is suitable for those who wish to repair and care for their own furniture or those wishing to buy and fix up furniture for them selves or to sell on to others. Some basic transferrable hand skills desired but not essential.

Course Outline:

Week one

Restoration, assessing for buying antique furniture

Week two

Careful disassembly of the chair (useful to see construction)

Week three

Structural restoration of all components

Week four

Patching and upholstery as requires

Week five

Re-assembly, clamping and gluing

Week six

Finishes such as staining, polishing, and waxing

Students are encouraged to use the self-directed Drop-In Making Days in the workshop during the six weeks to progress their stool project and work on other furniture design/build projects where a technician will be on hand. These workshops are non-booked and work on a drop in basis. They’re priced at £10 an hour plus an additional cost if machining is required by a technician.

Thinking of gifting a place on our courses for someone special? Our new Gift Certificates are now available to purchase!
