German Miners in Elizabethan Keswick – Their Life, Leavings & Legacy

Mark Hatton from The Cumbria Amenity Trust Mining History Society (CATMHS) will be talking to us about a colony of Copper Miners who arrived in Keswick from Germany in 1564. They brought advanced technology, innovative business models & forged new legal structures. Their arrival sparked a baby boom & led to violence, which culminated in murder. This talk considers whether their period in The Lake District is a key milestone in the industrial & commercial development of the British Isles & asks “ is Keswick the Birthplace of Capitalism, Advanced Technology, Process Industries & Company Law in Britain ?”

Local folk singer songwriter Freyja Evelyn is back to perform for us tomorrow night at 8! She studied Folk, Roots and Blues at Leeds Conservatoire and blends Scandinavian, Irish and English folk influences in her music.

We’ll be serving pizza again with our favourite beers on tap! so come for a cosy evening of live local music

Still time to join in with The Farmer’s Arms Gardening School this year!

Initiated in the pandemic by @grizedale.arts Head Gardener Karen Guthrie and now in its 6th season, this monthly hands-on class demystifies gardening techniques from pruning to mulching and motivates you with easy take-home hacks that work in our climate with minimal fuss.

You might think your money and time is better spent in your own garden, but trust us - within a few months you will save SO much of both with our School.

Tutor Karen says, “I only teach techniques that I myself have tried and know will work. I have gardened in the Lake District for 25 years now - in super challenging sites up mountains and beside rivers - and know so many lovely plants that thrive here. I hate wasting time and effort, so it’s my mission to share all the knowledge I’ve gained with others, and help everyone make better gardens and to enjoy doing it too.”

Fees are £450 for 10 classes, and we offer 3 half price places for unwaged folks. DM us to access these places and with any questions.
