In comparison to Potter, Ruskin and Wordsworth, a name not perhaps well known across Cumbria, or the UK generally, is Charlotte Mason.Charlotte Mason was a pioneer of home education. She supported the concept that a child is their own person and evidenced that individuals can benefit significantly from learning outdoors. Literature, art, science, geography, history and more can be explored outside of a classroom environment. But who exactly was Charlotte Mason? How did she create this program? And how is it still relevant or useful in today’s modern world? This presentation will explore the life and legacy of Charlotte Mason, the collection of which can be found in the stores of The Armitt museum and library in Ambleside.
