The Stable Bar

The Stable bar is the oldest part of the inn. For centuries a meeting place where locals and visitors gathered.

Recently restored to its former glory, an open fire, a jukebox and flowers from local gardens make for a bar like no other.

Our bar champions independent, organic producers. We serve a variety of beers from Cumbrian breweries, spirits from UK distilleries and award-winning organic house wines sourced from central Spain. To support kindred spirits doing things differently, we’ve found small, locals like Unsworth’s Yard, Ulverston Brewery, Fell Brewery, Shed 1 Gin and Lakes Brew Co.

In our kitchen, a lot of our produce is ethically-sourced, with many ingredients from neighbouring farms, from our Garden School plot and foraged locally. If we didn’t make it ourselves we don’t serve it: we even make all our desserts in house. We gladly cater for special dietary requirements – just ask – and we always have something on the menu for kids. On Fridays we fire up our beautiful outdoor wood-fired oven and serve made-to-order pizzas. Takeaways welcome.

On our bar walls, we’ve hung a fascinating collection of 18th-20th century posters, prints and original paintings with rural and local themes, curated by Grizedale Arts director Adam Sutherland (find out more here). Our eclectic furnishings include carefully-restored original wooden settles and chairs which have been at the inn for centuries, alongside local vintage finds and bespoke fittings.

The Wood Fired Oven

Our beautiful outdoor wood-fired oven sits in prime position in our garden by the workshops.

We regularly cook outdoors serving Friday night pizzas freshly baked to order, eat in or takeaway from 5.00pm – 8.30pm. Our menu uses the best Italian ingredients alongside local seasonal produce, and we make the all-important pizza base dough in-house. See our seasonal sample menus below, and we always have a few specials on too.

The oven is built from local larch with copper detailing – the black charring is a traditional Japanese weatherproofing technique. The oven was designed by Hayatsu Architects and built by architecture students from Central St Martins in London.

The oven is also available for private party bookings and workshops in the summer months (fantastic for tricky-to-please kids and teenagers!) – contact us for details.
