The Cumbria Vernacular Buildings Group was launched in June 2013 with the aim of increasing enjoyment and understanding of the county’s traditional buildings through a programme of field visits, training, lectures, study days, walks and similar events- open to anyone with an interest in Cumbria’s rich building heritage

Paul Lewis will be talking about the group and our locally distinctive building traditions.

Our final Soup Talker before we resume later in the year will be Paul Lewis from Cumbria Vernacular Buildings Group

Next Wednesday 23rd April, our weekly Soup Talker is Benjamin Wigley- founder of ARTDOCS, artist and filmmaker whose work resides at the intersection of art and documentary. With a keen focus on exploring the enchanting realms of Intangible Heritage and folklore, his projects serve as profound reflections on our connection to the natural world, particularly amidst the challenges posed by the climate crisis.

He has collaborated with artists, poets, scientists, academics & musicians, and has been mentored by world class filmmakers and producers, most recently working with Andrew Kotting on his multidisciplinary art project, Hart of the Wood. Ben’s film ‘Of Walking on Thin Ice, (Camino to COP26)’, about the 500 mile walk from London to Glasgow for COP26, had its World Premiere at Encounters Film Festival, after the film was walked 135 miles from London to Bristol within the ‘Film Staff’, It screened at over 60 communities across the UK and was screened as part of the Culture COP27, in Egypt. Ben’s most recent expanded film project, ‘Ways of the Plant’, (supported by ACE, the Lapworth Museum, & UNESCO Geopark) blends experimental documentary with live performance & art exhibition, the 30-minute artist moving image work was recently screened at the London Short Film Festival in 2024.

As always, £5 for talk and £5 for soup. Kicking off at 6:30pm- we’ll be looking at Bens work in some more detail by watching some shorts and clips, followed by a longer film at the end.

On Easter Sunday, ‘The Farmer’s Leg’, a selection of recent paintings by Ben Sadler will be opening in the Stable Bar.

Born in Birmingham in 1977, Ben Sadler studied at the Ruskin School of Art, Oxford, and the Royal College of Art, London. He is one half of the artist duo Juneau Projects, alongside Philip Duckworth.

Many of the paintings are based on old family photographs of holidays and trips: to coasts, forests, hills, mountains and countrysides around the UK.

We’ll also have some copies of Ben’s new book ‘You and I’ published under Hurtwood Press’ Contemporary Artist Series. Plus we’ll be serving our popular Sunday roast open 12-5 as usual so plenty of reasons to stop by!
