Next week’s soup talker is @fermental_health - visual artist, writer, and landworker who works open-endedly across many disciplines including sculpture, installation, foraging, cooking, publishing, workshops and community gardening. Until its closure, he was a core member of The Field, an experimental artist- run living project in an ex-National Coal Board and Steiner School building in Derbyshire.

Roy’s talk ‘Degrowth in Practice: How to do less and stay sane’ will share work from recent projects and poetry from his debut collection, ‘stewarding’, out now on Monitor Books

He was also a brilliant volunteer in residence during our Action on Food Waste Week here @thefarmersarms_ in 2022!

Unfortunately Roy won’t be joining us in person so you have the option to join this talk remotely. We will be broadcasting it live here at the pub too though- so come down if you’d like soup

Exciting new projects ahead for the 2025 school – the design & planting of a community orchard, wildflower meadows and cut flowers! And if you didn’t know, this is Cumbria’s only comprehensive horticultural course, delivered in fantastic surroundings and with a small group of no more than 12 students. Join us this Wednesday 5 March at The Farmer’s Arms for Soup Talk, 6.30 to 8pm – our delicious soup and a stimulating talk slot, weekly on Wednesdays.

Our soup talker this week is Jonathan Orlek – Senior Lecturer in Architecture at Liverpool John Moores University and Director of Studio Polpo (a social enterprise architecture collective, the first pic here is of Studio Polpo’s pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennial no less!).

Orlek’s talk for us is ‘Artist- Led Housing - Sustaining a Creative Rural Life?’. Artist-led housing solutions are a passion for Orlek and this seems set to be a lively discussion! His edited book, Artist-Led Housing: Histories, Residencies, Spaces (2024) explores the role of artist-led organisations within the provision of housing. With a wide range of contributions—and expanding out of his embedded research and practice with East Street Arts—the recent publication suggests a range of future trajectories for living together creatively.
